Chief Medical Officer at Celgene Corporation Donates $225,000 to the American Liver Foundation to Fund a Liver Researcher

Dr. Jerome Zeldis Gives Back to the Organization That Launched His Career

New York, July 11, 2007 – Dr. Jerome Zeldis, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs of Celgene Corporation, presented the American Liver Foundation (ALF) with a grant in the amount of $225,000 to sponsor a new researcher in liver disease. Dr. Zeldis, the first recipient of ALF’s “Liver Scholar” award, also agreed to act as Honorary Chair of ALF’s newly-created Research Awards Alumni Association. The Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the needs of the more than 30 million Americans affected by liver disease, is one of the largest funding sources for liver-related research in the nation. This year alone, ALF awarded $1.2 million to 16 researchers.

“Receiving the ALF grant was a paradigm shift in my career,” said Dr. Zeldis. “I don’t know if I would have gone on to receive funding from the National Institutes of Health to continue my research into liver disease, were it not for the grant.”

The ALF Research Awards program is second only to the National Institutes of Health in funding research into liver diseases. Since 1979, the American Liver Foundation has awarded over $20 million in funding to more than 650 researchers. The grants are designed to encourage young scientists to make a lifelong commitment to the study of liver disease.

“The Research Awards program is at the heart of our organization,” said Dr. James L. Boyer, Chairman of the Board and Director of the Liver Center at Yale University School of Medicine. “As the government reduces medical research funding, it is important to that generous individuals, like Jerome Zeldis, help fund the research that will find more effective treatments and cures for liver disease.”

Dr. Zeldis holds an A.B. and M.Sc. in molecular biology from Brown University, and earned a M.Phil, a M.D. and a Ph.D. in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the UCLA Center for the Health Sciences and was a clinical and research fellow in gastroenterology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
