Newton Guerin

Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer


Newton Guerin joined the staff of the American Liver Foundation as Chief Operating Officer on December 31, 2007. Following his graduation from the University of Alabama Birmingham with a degree in Psychology, Mr. Guerin began his career in the not for profit sector as Field Representative with the American Cancer Society in Birmingham Alabama. Mr. Guerin brings over 37 years of leadership experience with senior management positions in three of the nations leading voluntary health agencies.

During his ten year career with the American Cancer Society, Mr. Guerin served as a National Representative on the home office staff providing consultation and training in all aspects of strategic and operational planning, financial management and staff development to 5 statewide Divisions. While serving in this role, he also led an initiative to enhance public awareness throughout the entire southeast. He later rejoined the Alabama Division as Deputy Executive Vice President where he provided ongoing support, advice and guidance to all department heads and managed all human resource functions.

Mr. Guerin held a number of progressively responsible positions during his 24-year career with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. As Chief of Staff, he led the home office annual planning and budgeting process – 124 employees with an annual budget of $80 million. He also managed the Society’s strategic planning process including directing a collaborative effort involving over 70 staff and leadership volunteers that resulted in increased attention and resources on strategy deployment at all levels of the organization. Mr. Guerin directed the CEO’s management team enhancing Chapter President involvement in determining organizational priorities and addressing critical issues facing the Society. He served on the Organizational Effectiveness Task Force that resulted in creating a new governance model.

Immediately prior to joining the ALF, Mr. Guerin served as Regional Director with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society providing management oversight to staff and leadership volunteers in eight major markets throughout the country. These Chapters accounted for over $37 million in annual revenue. Mr. Guerin consulted on all aspects of chapter operations, including revenue development, patient services and advocacy programs, along with volunteer and staff development.

Mr.Guerin lives in Fredericksburg Virginia with his wife Jane.
