President and Chief Executive Officer

Rick Smith assumed the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Liver Foundation on November 1, 2007. Mr. Smith graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1975 with a degree in Recreation Administration and began his career in the non-profit field as Director of Programs and Physical Education at the North Side YMCA in Wichita, Kansas. He has subsequently spent 32 years in the health agency field and today is nationally recognized as a leader in integrated strategic planning and innovative approaches to performance management. Mr. Smith has consulted with corporations and non-profit organizations in strategic planning and performance management.
After leaving the YMCA, Mr. Smith served as Executive Director of the American Cancer Society in Maryland, Executive Director of the American Diabetes Association in New Mexico, Regional Vice-President of the Western United States for the American Diabetes Association and President/CEO of the California Affiliate of the American Diabetes Association. During his tenure with the American Diabetes Association, Mr. Smith also created and managed the national integrated strategic planning process, the integrated performance planning initiative and designed and managed the affiliate certification process.
After leaving the American Diabetes Association, Mr. Smith spent the next 20 years in a variety of leadership positions with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He served as Area Vice-President of the Western United States where revenue grew from $5.5 million to over $18 million, President of the Arizona Chapter and President of the Maryland Chapter. He also authored, developed and implemented the national strategic planning initiative, served on the national Management Team, chaired the Collaborative Coalition and served on the Blue Ribbon Panel on Organizational Structure.
In addition to his professional activities, Mr. Smith has been active with the Albuquerque Public Schools, Camp Fire Girls of New Mexico, Greater Baltimore Committee, Arizona Voluntary Health Agencies and remains involved and interested in politics.
Mr. Smith lives in Manhattan with his daughter who is in acting school.
