This program is intended for primary care physicians, gastroenterologists, hepatologists, oncologists, infectious disease specialists, internists, nurses and nurse practitioners.
1. Compare the models used for assessing severity of liver disease and the type of surgeries planned and their impact on recommending surgery.
2. Review drugs in advanced liver disease. Review the impact of hepatic vs. renal metabolism on the choice of drugs in liver disease. Discuss various classes of medication that can be impacted in advanced liver disease. Review some of the common drugs that should be avoided and others that should be adjusted.
3. Review the impact of minimal and frank neurobehavioral changes in patients with advanced liver disease on their functionality. Specifically,the impact of minimal hepatic encephalopathy on the ability to drive or operate machinery. Also, review state and federal guidelines as pertains to physician, family, and patient responsibility.
4. Understand Child/Meld score and other methods of assessing the severity of liver disease as it pertains to the timing and urgency of transplantation and understand contraindication for transplant in these patients.
5. Review the most recent developments in monitoring and preventing complications of liver disease including labs, drugs, imaging, scopes and vaccines and demonstrate future impact.
This CME activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education thru the Joint Sponsorship of the Institute for Medical Studies (IMS) and the American Liver Foundation. IMS is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The Institute for Medical Studies designates this educational activity for a maximum of 5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Nurses may claim credit for activities approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits ™ in most states, for up to 50% of the nursing requirement for recertification. This activity is designated for up to 5 AMA PRA Category1 Credits ™

A donation of $30 to cover the costs of the symposium is suggested and greatly appreciated. Payment can be made by check, cash or credit card. Make checks payable to the American Liver Foundation. Payments will be accepted at the event.
