ANNUAL FOOTBALL WALK FOR LIVER WELLNESS MAKES HISTORY

>Attracts largest number of patients, supporters and donors ever!

(September 30, 2007) --WHO: The Third Annual Football Walk for Liver Wellness featuring over 500 walkers who have raised over $80,000 to date for research, education and advocacy programs on behalf of liver disease patients. Every walker has a story; here are a few:

Tom Hamilton of Ipswich, will walk for his 17-month old son Joseph, who had a liver transplant at Children’s Hospital in Boston in May 2007. Since his surgery, Joseph has caught up in his development milestones and is a bright and curious little boy.

Marlene Veldwisch of Belmont, and her team named the Hepa-titans, will honor Marlene’s 13-year fight against the hepatitis C virus. She is a motivational speaker, active volunteer and businesswoman and a mother who works hard to stay fit and active.

Kathyrn Christy of Somerville, had a living donor transplant in 2005 due to Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. Her mother donated eighty percent of her liver to keep her daughter alive.

Keri Harrington of Medford, has a mother who lives with Primary Biliary Cirrhosis.

Melissa Constanti of Dedham, is walking on behalf of her father who was recently diagnosed with liver cancer. Her father lives in South Boston.

WHAT: The American Liver Foundation New England Chapter leads the fight against liver disease in its many forms. We promote liver health and provide education, support and advocacy for the more than 30 million Americans affected by liver disease. Part of the walk funds will go directly to research. ALF has provided more than $20.1 million in research. For more information or to support the walk, contact Elizabeth Buell at 617.527.5600 or log onto http://www.liverfoundation.org/chapters/newengland/events/21/
WHEN: Sunday, September 30, 2007. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Matt Noyes, New England Cable News Meteorologist, will emcee the kick-off program at 10 a.m. and MIKE-FM 93.7 will entertain the walkers during the event. The walk commences at 10:15 a.m.

WHERE: South Boston Waterfront. The scenic five-mile walk will travel from the Mother’s Rest Area on Day Boulevard, across from Moakley Park, to Castle Island and back to the Bayside Expo Center North Entrance. Entertainment and refreshments provided.

WHY: Why a Football Theme? The liver is the largest organ in the body. It produces, regulates, controls, maintains, distributes and monitors -- a role much like that of the quarterback during a football game. The liver weighs about three pounds and is similar in size, shape and color to a football. Many patients find this easy walk a good way to help fight liver disease.
