ALF & AASLD Research Awards Program

Research is integral to the work of the American Liver Foundation (ALF) and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), and is essential to improving treatment and finding cures.

Since 1979, the Research Awards Program has provided more than $20.1 million for research. More than 650 qualified scientists and physicians have pursued careers in liver disease research and treatment as a result of receiving ALF and AASLD grants early in their careers.

The 2008-2009 Grants Review Committee has been announced.

The 2008 Research Awards Program awarded $950,000 to twelve applicants, including:

  • 2 Liver Scholar Awards
  • 1 Biliary Atresia Special Research Initiative Award
  • 1 Primary Biliary Cirrhosis Special Research Initiative Award
  • 8 Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Awards

Liver Scholar Awards support scientists with liver research training to help them bridge the gap between completion of research training and attainment of status as an independent research scientist. Liver Scholar awards provide $225,000 over three years and are for salary support only. This year, a special Liver Scholar award will be offered in the area of cystic fibrosis cholestatic liver disease, in addition to the standard Liver Scholar awards.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Awards help in the professional development of individuals with research potential who require additional training and experience in preparation for a career of independent liver research. These awards provide $12,500 over one year.

Special Research Initiatives provide support to scientists for research on a specific liver disease. Through our special research initiatives this year, ALF will offer awards in the areas of biliary atresia and primary biliary cirrhosis research. These awards provide $200,000 over two years.
