Based in Chicago, the Great Lakes Division covers Illinois and Michigan. The Division works to promote liver wellness and educational initiatives through targeted programs that reach youth, patients, the general public and the professional community. The Division works to fundraise through special events, private contributions and foundations to support the promotion of liver wellness education and information and to additionally support our national research agenda.

The American Liver Foundation relies on volunteer support in many aspects of our work. Your small contribution of time can make a huge impact on fundraising, education and other critical components of liver disease research and treatment. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Brandon Combs, Asst. Executive Director at bcombs@liverfoundation.org.

  • Obtain 15 minutes of a regularly scheduled employee meeting for American Liver Foundation to present a Liver Wellness Update to the employee base
  • Be a company Team Captain for the Liver Life Walks or Liver Life Challenge events
    Assist in securing financial sponsorship and/or matching gifts to support education and research initiatives through your company
  • Provide information about liver wellness for your company’s health and wellness center, internal employee newsletter, payroll stuffer and/or online publication
  • Staff an American Liver Foundation information table at your company health fair or at a local wellness event
  • Join Get Fit and create a workplace wellness committee
  • Staff a health exposition: promote awareness and on-site health screenings
  • Assist in procuring American Liver Foundation media opportunities for PSA/public service announcements
  • Assist with registration, set up or speak at American Liver Foundation patient updates/symposiums on liver wellness
  • Promote Liver Wellness or event public service announcements through Radio/TV (information provided)
  • Co-present and/or organize a Love Your Liver Youth Training Program at your child’s school
  • Write your personal story for the Division promotional materials, newsletter and/or website
  • Take local/regional legislative/advocacy meetings with the American Liver Foundation staff and tell your story

Lend your time, talent and expertise to our fundraising and awareness events: Liver Life Walks, Liver Life Challenge or the Flavors Culinary Gala. From marketing and promotion to sponsorship and in-kind development for goods and services to auction procurement, to day of event set up and logistics-there are many opportunities that are required to fulfill an ambitious fundraising plan. MARATHON VOLUNTEER

Present – October 8, 2017, 5 hours a week. Volunteer from home or volunteer from our office in Chicago!

Primary Function:
Assist with organizing Team ALF for the 2017 Bank of America Chicago Marathon

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Helping recruit participants to Team ALF by making presentations and passing out brochures to running clubs and at running stores and keeping track of visits on an excel spreadsheet
  • Put up flyers in local businesses and keep spreadsheet as to locations
  • Update virtual community bulletin boards and keep spreadsheet as to locations

Related Skills or Knowledge

  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft programs including Excel and Word
  • Able to present self in professional and courteous manner
  • Should be interested in the sport of running. Being a member of a local running community is a plus.

LIVER LIFE WALK VOLUNTEER

Host a Community Liver Life Walk in Your Community

Primary Functions:

  • Assist with planning the 2017 Liver Life Walks
  • Assist on event day to ensure the Liver Life Walk runs smoothly

ALF CHEER SQUAD VOLUNTEER

October 8th, 2017 – 7am-12:00pm, 35th & Expressway, Chicago, IL

Primary Function:
Cheer on our Team ALF Chicago Marathon Runners to victory on Sunday, October 8, 2017!

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Positive attitude, energy, and excitement!
  • Loud voice and muscles to shake the marathon cheer bells!
  • Warm clothes…..layer up – you never know what the weather will be like on race day!

EDUCATIONAL VOLUNTEER

Primary Function:
Educational volunteers, under the direction of the Program Manager, will assist with the implementation of the core education programs.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct outreach to schools and community-based organizations
  • Schedule and present Love Your Liver programs
  • Assist with evaluation summary process for Love Your Liver Program participants

  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Experience and interest in working with youth
  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic and committed to excellence of work
  • Familiarity with Powerpoint

It is the American Liver Foundation’s hope that after participating in an educational program, students will have a greater awareness and understanding of the liver’s importance and will take action to maximize their liver health and to prevent the spread of liver disease.

All education volunteers receive a comprehensive training on the program and its implementation.

We are currently accepting interns.

INTERNSHIP OBJECTIVES

Assist with, development, logistics, and implementation of educational programs, including Town Halls, Health Fairs, and Core Programs.

  • Research target organizations for educational programming opportunities
  • Make 10 phone calls per week to different organizations to identify program delivery interest and update spreadsheet accordingly
    • Fitness facilities, running franchises (Fleet Feet, etc.), corporations, banks, nonprofits, community organizations, cooking demonstrations, etc.
    • Organize meetings between organizations and ALF to discuss partnership
    • Maintain database of prospective program hosts
    • Create a follow-up schedule to re-contact voice mail messages
    • Identify corporations for educational grants (3 by end of internship)
    • Identify foundations for educational grants (3 by end of internship)
  • Create flyers for upcoming town halls, health fairs, programs
  • Assist with program promotion
Receive educational training in the ALF core programs and deliver at least one educational presentation before the internship ends.
  • Receive training within first week of internship with ALF National Office
  • Research community organizations to deliver program
  • Organize 1 presentation during internship (room, equipment, refreshments)
