Preventing Disease through Education

The liver may be the largest organ in the body, weighing in at 3 1/2 pounds, but it is neither the most popular nor the best understood. So when a diagnosis of liver disease is made, it can be a frightening and confusing time in the lives of many patients and their families. That's where the American Liver Foundation comes in.

One of the most powerful ways of maintaining liver health and preventing liver disease is education. Many forms of liver disease are preventable, and many more can be cured if detected early. Yet tens of thousands of people in the U.S. are living with liver disease and don’t even know it. That’s why education about liver wellness and disease prevention is at the heart of everything we do. We implement a wide range of educational and preventative efforts.

  • Preventative screenings: We screen thousands of people annually for hepatitis and liver disease, with a focus on at-risk populations.
  • Vital vaccinations: We have helped provide access to safe, effective vaccines for millions of people.
  • Community events: Each year, our chapters hold hundreds of events that raise public awareness of liver disease, risk factors, symptoms, and prevention. Find a chapter near you.
  • Educational Seminars: Our chapters organize hundreds of workshops every year to update healthcare professionals and patients on the latest treatments, research, liver wellness, transplant issues, and other liver-related topics.
  • Toll-free HelpLine: Callers from across the nation can speak to staff on our HelpLine at 1-800-GO-LIVER for information on preventing and living with liver disease.
  • Online Information: Our Liver Disease Information Center provides current information about liver diseases and treatments, along with vital links to additional information. ALF also maintains www.THINKB.org, which provides information and assistance to those affected by hepatitis B, and www.YourLiver.org, which provides information on how to maintain liver health.
