Current volunteer opportunities
Speakers Bureau
The American Liver Foundation’s National Capital Area Chapter receives numerous requests every year to make speakers available to groups wishing to learn more about liver wellness and liver disease. Additionally, we implement a number of educational programs locally for groups at risk of liver disease or who are currently living with liver disease. Speaking venues can include health fairs, seminars and workshops, support group meetings, professional luncheons or dinner meetings, and fund raising events.
While our staff and members of our medical advisory committee are often asked to speak about our organization or about a specific illness, some of the most compelling speakers are those who have been personally affected by liver disease. If you have experienced liver disease personally, either through your own illness or that of someone you love, and are comfortable talking to others about your experience, please consider this volunteer opportunity. We can discuss the venue that would be most comfortable for you as well as provide some speaker training to prepare you for the event.
Event Committees
The American Liver Foundation’s National Capital Area Chapter hosts a number of events throughout the year to raise awareness of liver disease and to raise funds for research for cures.
We are currently seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help with planning two fall events:
Flavors of Baltimore-a culinary event featuring Baltimore chefs that will take place on Saturday September 13, 2008
Liver Life Walk/Run 2008-our annual walk/run to promote liver health in Columbia, MD on Saturday September 27, 2008
Marine Corps Marathon-seeking runners and helpers for the Run for Research Team for the marathon on Sunday October 26, 2008 in Arlington, VA
For each of these events, we can use help with planning, recruiting participation, securing sponsorships and materials, promotions, and day-of-event assistance.
Health Fairs
The American Liver Foundation’s National Capital Area Chapter is invited to numerous health fairs all over Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland. These events are a great opportunity to reach out to the community and provide education and awareness about liver wellness and liver disease. Because our local staff is limited, we rely on volunteers to assist us with staffing our booth during these events.
For each of these events, we can use help with set up, day-of-event booth staffing, and break down of booth/materials return. This opportunity requires no experience with liver disease, but a great deal of energy and enthusiasm and an interest in liver disease prevention and treatment.
