The American Liver Foundation Mid-America Division has many exciting opportunities for you to help in the fight against liver disease.
People of all ages and all walks of life team up to participate in the annual walk events. The purpose of these walk events is to raise money to fund the American Liver Foundation Mid-America Division's research and education programs, to increase awareness of the seriousness of liver disease, and to empower citizens to fight liver disease.
This year’s walk is as follows:
Liver Updates
One of several educational programs, the “Liver Updates” are patient education seminars designed to give patients with liver disease and their family members an opportunity to obtain first hand information on the latest treatments and research breakthroughs from some of the nation’s leading liver specialists.
Fashion Show and Sale
The Mid-America Division team up with transplant recipients and local celebrities to present Spring into Fashion Shows each April during Organ Tissue Donation Awareness Month.
Screening Initiatives
Approximately 4 million U.S. people suffer from HCV and often show no outward symptoms for as many as 30 years. The ALF, in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of early detection, is working to provide free and confidential screening and educational programs to high-risk groups.
Liver Awareness Month
Each October, chapters across the nation bring awareness to the public about the importance of the liver and sharing knowledge about liver disease.
The Boogie Ball to benefit the American Liver Foundation
In 2008 Gloria Gaynor and the Village People and 2009 the Pointer Sisters headlined the American Liver Foundation's annual gala. We are working on signing a national act for 2010. This event showcases individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the Mid-America Division throughout the year.
National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week
Various activities include education about organ donation.
Veterans and Hepatitis C Task Force
This is an ongoing initiative to educate veterans about the risk of hepatitis C. Veterans are at increased risk of having been exposed to hepatitis C.
Support Groups
American Liver Foundation promotes support groups throughout the state for individuals and their families affected by liver diseases.
Advocacy Committee
The Mid-America Division is working actively in conjunction with local, state and federal policymakers to advance medical research and public health education programs.
Health Fairs
The ALF is invited to several health fairs each month. Health fairs are a great way to get to know various health professionals, learn how to best take care of oneself, and have fun in the process!
