The American Liver Foundation (ALF) facilitates, advocates and promotes education, support and research for the prevention, treatment and cure of liver disease.
ALF’s Treatment Choices Initiative (TCI) is an education program targeted to individuals who have or are at high risk of hepatitis C infection. The program educates participants about the liver, liver disease, specifically hepatitis C, treatment options and other disease management strategies. The program also provides perspectives from hepatitis C positive individuals and additional support.
TCI programs are conducted at community-based organizations that serve individuals with or at high risk of hepatitis C infection. These include hospitals and clinics, veterans’ organizations, drug treatment facilities, homeless shelters, and drop in centers.
TCI programs are scheduled in collaboration with community-based agencies and are available all year.
The 60-minute program educates participants about the liver, its functions, and strategies to maximize liver health. A healthcare professional provides an overview of viral hepatitis and details hepatitis C risks, transmission methods, prevention, impact, disease treatment and symptom management. A patient speaker offers his or her personal experience with hepatitis C. Program speakers and participants finish the program with a discussion of information and local resources.
It is the American Liver Foundation’s hope that after participating in TCI, participants will have a greater awareness and understanding of the liver’s importance and will take action to improve their liver health and to prevent the spread of liver disease.
